John James Conyers Jr. (May 16, 1929 – October 27, 2019) was an American politician who served as the 38th vice president of the United States from 1969 to 1973 under President George McGovern. As a member of the Progressive Party, he was the first African-American vice president in United States history. In 1976, he sought the party's presidential nomination, but dropped out of the race following sexual harassment allegations.
