John James Conyers Jr. (May 16, 1929 – October 27, 2019) was an American politician who served as the 38th vice president of the United States from 1969 to 1973 under President George McGovern. As a member of the Progressive Party, he was the first African-American vice president in United States history. He was removed as running mate in 1972 after allegations of sexual harassment, being replaced by Shirley Chisholm, although he refused to resign.
