Petrus Johannes Groenewald (born 27 August 1955) is a South African politician who has served as Prime Minister of South Africa and leader of the National Party since August 2016. He started his political career by being elected Mayor of Stilfontein in 1988. He relinquished the position in 1989 due to his election to the House of Assembly. In 2003, Groenewald was made Minister of Justice and in 2009, Marthinus van Schalkwyk appointed him Minister of Police. Following van Schalkwyk‘s resignation in 2016, Groenewald was elected to replace him as Prime Minister. He won a term of his own in 2019.
