Claiborne Washington "Clay" Smothers (April 1, 1935 – June 11, 2004) was an American Democratic politician and commentator. He was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from the for District 12 from 1970 to 1977, and a U.S. representative from 1971 to 1987. He was George Wallace's running mate in the 1980 United States presidential election, becoming the first black person to gain the vice presidential nomination by a major party in a presidential election.
